Glasgow City Archives

The City Archives is the official archive of Glasgow City and its predecessor authorities. It aims to manage the records of the City efficiently; identify and preserve records of historical, social and cultural importance; and make them available for the information, education and enjoyment of the public. The City Archives was formally established in 1964 when the Town Clerk appointed the first professional City Archivist. In 1975, the service became Strathclyde Regional Archives and took on a wider geographical remit including the counties of Argyll, Ayr, Bute, Dumbarton, Lanark and Renfrew as well as the city itself. In 1996, local government in Scotland was re-organised again and the service became Glasgow City Archives once more. The City Archives has been based in The Mitchell Library since 1984. The largest single collection is the records of the city of Glasgow itself, which includes records from the modern City Council and its predecessors as well as the official records of other various local authorities. The City Archives also holds many private archive collections. These include church archives, the records of the Clyde Navigation Trust, family and estate archives, the records of the Merchants and Trades Houses (including the incorporated trades), shipbuilding archives, Strathclyde Police archives and the records of the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society among others.
