Scope and Content

The collection contains one folder comprising of Henry and Palacia Alabaster's personal correspondence and transcripts of their letters with notes and an index by John S. Alabaster. 27 original letters and copies.

Administrative / Biographical History

Henry Alabaster (1836-1884), Chaloner's elder brother, was educated at King's College London. He served the British government in Thailand (c.1857-1873) and later became special adviser to the King of Siam. On the 2nd September 1865 he married Palacia Emma Fahey by whom he had four children. He authored a number of literary works including "The Wheel of the Law," subtitled 'Buddhism from Siamese Sources, by the modern Buddhist, a life of Buddha, and an account of the Phrabat' (1871).
