Administrative / Biographical History

In 1867, Thomas McLaren established himself as a broker for the building, purchasing, selling and chartering of steamers and sailing ships with offices in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1882, George Milne became a partner in the firm which became known as Thomas McLaren & Co. By 1898, the company's main office was at Bothwell Street, Glasgow, where they described themselves as, "Brokers for the sale, purchase and construction of steamers of all kinds. Naval Architects. Plans and specifications prepared for cargo steamers, passenger and general cargo steamers, paddle steamers, yachts, launches, dredgers, etc. Shipping Valuators." The company at this point emplyed draughtsman, tracers and two sea captains who were responsible for moving customers' vessels on the river and arranging delivery voyages throughout the world. In 1948 the business was incorporated as Thomas McLaren & Co (Glasgow) Ltd. The company went into decline following the large reduction in coastal shipowning and the acquisition of many shipping companies by larger groups undertaking their own brokerage activity. The company ceased trading in 1974.
