The collection comprises signed minute books. There are two directors' minute books coveringApril 1887-March 1948 (BEX 1). They contain information about the general operational activities andscope of the company. The minutes also record the customers that the company supplied electricityto.
There are also two shareholders' minute books covering February 1920-March 1948 (BEX 2). Theshareholders' minute books record details of financial and share ownership aspects of thecompany.
The origins of the Midland Electric Light and Power Company Limited are not known but itssixty-seventh annual general meeting was held in 1948, suggesting a start date of about 1881. Thecompany was based in Birmingham and generated electricity which it supplied to the city, to Coventryand to Warwickshire. The firm had a close relationship with the Midland Counties Electric SupplyCompany Limited from the mid-1930s.
The company was nationalised in 1948 with the rest of the electric power industry and itsactivities were taken over by the East Midlands Electricity Board.
