The society was founded in 1960 to encourage study, teaching and research in the field of labour history and to safeguard the preservation of labour archives.

Custodial History
The records were deposited on indefinite loan in the Centre in 1979. There were further additions to the archive in 1987, 1988, 1991, 2009 and 2014.
