The Conservative Party
Conservative instead of the traditional term, Tory, was first used in Britainby George Canning (1770-1827) in 1824. The term became more popular after itwas used by Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850) in his Tamworth Manifesto in 1834. Inthe Tamworth Manifesto Peel attempted to combine the idea of moderate reformwith a strong belief in traditional institutions. After Peel became PrimeMinister in 1834, his followers tended to describe themselves asConservatives rather than Tories.
