Cartoons from local papers

Scope and Content

A series of bound volumes containing a collection of cartoons taken from Birmingham-based newspapers or pamplets. The majority of these cartoons are printed in black and white, with the date visible on the relevant page. The pages within each volume mostly run chronologically.

Cartoons depict well-known, mostly political, figures both from Birmingham and the wider UK. The cartoons are also of a satirical nature, mentioning various key events and political issues from late-19th century Britain and the wider World.

Some cartoons depict life within the city of Birmingham, mentioning cultural, theatrical, and sporting events. Themes include transportation, crime, and education. Volumes specify locations within Birmingham and the wider United Kingdom. The volumes also include advertisements for products or events.
