Administrative / Biographical History

The United Machine Workers' Association was founded in Manchester in 1844. The Union was in constant conflict with the Amalgamated Society of Engineers due to the representative trades and members being virtually the same. The Union was a founder member of the Federation of Engineering and Shipbuilding Trades in 1891 and by 1914 represented some 14,000 members. The members eventually agreed to merge in 1920 to form the Amalgamated Engineering Union.
