Scope and Content

Papers of George Goyder mainly covering his involvement and work with the Church Assembly and its successor body the General Synod, and other Christian organisations including the Nationwide Festival of Light. The collection includes copies of speeches and articles written by Goyder and correspondence regarding Goyder's campaigns against pornography and immorality.

Administrative / Biographical History

George Goyder was a member of the Church Assembly, 1948-1970, and General Synod, 1970-1975, and a leading layman in the Church of England in the post-war period, for instance with regard to the establishment of synodical government. He was author of 'The People's Church' [printed books ref. H5182.G6]. See 'Who was Who' for further biographical detail.

Arrangement

Files containing correspondence regarding the campaign for synodical government and canon law reform have been arranged in chronological order and merged into single files (MS 4956 and MS 4957 respectively). The file arrangement for the remaining records was kept intact.

Given to the Library in 2009 by the Goyder family.

Related Material

Goyder's papers on other subjects such as company law reform, corporate responsibility and the moral responsibilities of business were not transferred to the Library.
