Rev. Ellis Jones, Bangor Papers

Scope and Content

A collection of personal papers. Letters addressed to Rev. Ellis Jones from various correspondents, 1918 - 1923; sermons, 1883 - 1884 and diaries, 1912 - 1918 with a few entries made whilst he worked for the Y.M.C.A. in France in 1918.

There are notebooks with draft notes as well as essays and articles which appeared in Y Dysgedydd or were intended for publication. The subjects covered in particular include Ebenezer and other Congregational chapels in North Wales and various religious figures. There is also an essay entitled The History of the City of Bangor 1700 - 1914 which won second prize in the National Eisteddfod held in Bangor, 1914.

There are a couple of miscellaneous items. A scrap book, owned by Rev. Owen Jones with details of the members of Bethania Chapel in Mountain Ash, Glamorganshire, 1890 - 1903 and later notes in the hand of Rev. Ellis Jones. There are also Ebenezer Chapel collection books for the Llew Tegid fund.

Administrative / Biographical History

Rev. Ellis Jones was a Congregational minister at Ebenezer Chapel, Bangor until his retirement in 1934. An active man, with a keen interest in the history of the city of Bangor as well as the history of Congregationalism in north Wales. He wrote articles for Y Dysgedydd and the North Wales Chronicle. He died in 1945.

Rev. Owen Jones, was a minister at Bethania Chapel, Mountain Ash, Glamorgan between 1890 and 1909. After 1909 he lived in Nant Ffrancon until his death in 1924.
