Scope and Content

A miscellaneous collection of notes compiled by J. Glyn Davies which are described as eminently frank, fierce, uncompromising and irrepressible. Amongst them are such items as his recollections of Hugh Owen Thomas, the Liverpool bone surgeon.

Notebook containing rough jottings and commentaries by J. Glyn Davies, mainly on Irish words and phrases. Also included is a draft account of childhood days in and around Porth Dinllaen, Caernarfonshire.

Translation of the Danish poem, Zacchaeus by Jeppe Aakjear.

Copies of photographs and articles by and relating to J. Glyn Davies including reviews of his books of poetry and an account by his daughter, Elin Williams, of her memories of her father.

Administrative / Biographical History

J. Glyn Davies, scholar and poet, was born in 1870. He became the Head of the Celtic Department at Liverpool University in 1920 until 1936 and is the author of such well-known publications as Cerddi Huw Puw, 1923; Cerddi Robin Goch, 1935 and Cerddi Portinllaen, 1936. He died in 1953.The Papers of J. Glyn Davies are held at the National Library of Wales.
