Scope and Content

Photographs of native Americans [Red Indians, American Indians] such as chiefs, warriors, and women. Includes portraits of Sitting Bull's son and Iron Horn. These photographs are assumed to have been taken in Dakota Territory.

Administrative / Biographical History

David Barry was born in the vicinity of Rochester, New York. He and his family moved in 1861 to Wisconsin. Barry was employed by the photographer O.S. Goff and joined him at his gallery in Bismarck. Between 1878-1883, Barry travelled around Dakota Territory. He used a portable photographic studio to take portaits of famous Native American chiefs, women, scouts and warriors. Barry also took photographs of forts and battlefields of the Plains Wars. He moved to Superior, Wisconsin in 1890 to open a photographic studio and gallery.
