Administrative / Biographical History

Central Register and Clearing House Ltd originated in the Clearing House Committee of the Council of Principals, set up in 1933 to process applications for places at teacher training colleges. In 1943 the Council of Principals became the Association of Teachers in Colleges and Departments of Education. The Clearing House Committee continued to meet and its activities were extended to cover applicants for both university and non-university courses. The volume of applications dealt with eventually became so great that the Clearing House Committee was formed into an independent body. In 1962 it became the Central Register and Clearing House Ltd. In 1992 the Clearing House was wound up and its responsibilities passed to the University Central Council of Admissions (UCCA) and the Polytechnic Council Admissions Service (PCAS).
