Administrative / Biographical History

Sir Hugh James Protheroe Thomas (1879-1924), land agent and estate owner, was the son of James Thomas of Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. He married Charlotte Eveline Matthews in 1904, and he was Mayor of Haverfordwest twice, in 1909-1910 and 1918-1919. He bought the Gadlys Estate, in Aberdare, Glamorgan, in 1914. He was a partner in his father's firm, James Thomas & Son, land and estate agents, based in Haverfordwest. In 1920, he acquired the Milford Haven Estate; he also bought estates in Landshipping and Fishguard. He was knighted in 1922, and died in 1924, when his widow took over his estates; the firm of James Thomas & Son remained active into the 1930s.
