Scope and Content

The Theatres Trust Archive contains:

Theatre files (c.2,700) which are the Trust’s working files, for extant theatres, buildings converted to other uses and demolished buildings. The files contain correspondence, press cuttings, building descriptions, photographs and plans.

Planning applications and associated documents (architectural plans, design statements and conservation plans) where there has been a theatre pre-application, planning application or application for listed building consent submitted to a Local Planning Authority and referred to The Theatres Trust in its role as a Statutory Consultee.

Photographs including Trust copyright photographs (and some negatives), photographs taken by Ian Grundy (now taken and submitted in digital form), slides, and other copyright images.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Theatres Trust is The National Advisory Public Body for theatres. The Trust was established by The Theatres Trust Act 1976 to promote the better protection of theatres. It is a statutory consultee on theatre buildings in the planning system, provides expert advice on the sustainable development of theatre buildings and helps promote awareness and solutions for theatres at risk. It champions all theatres, historic, contemporary and new, in theatre use, in other uses or disused.
