Administrative / Biographical History

James Melrose was born on 5 August 1828, to a family of sheepskin dealers. He became a surveyor and land agent and his company, Melrose and Hornsey, was responsible for draining the boggy ground at the Knavesmire in York, enabling its use as a racecourse. It was in part this work that secured his admission to the York Race Committee, and later the position of Chairman which he was to hold for 50 years. He was also a prominent member of York society and was a director of Yorkshire Gas, Yorkshire Insurance and the Yorkshire Savings bank, as well as treasurer of York County Hospital and the School for the Blind. He became Lord Mayor of York in 1876.
James Melrose died aged 100 in 1929.
