Papers of Annie Ffoulkes

The first group of papers has been divided into the following sections : letters, essays and addresses, poetry, miscellaneous. The letters, 1883 - 1958 are written to and from both Edward Ffoulkes and Annie Ffoulkes. Amongst the correspondents are Sir John Morris Jones, T. Gwynn Jones, R. Williams Parry, Thomas Parry, Kate Roberts and other Welsh notables. The subjects discussed are mostly of a literary nature. On a more personal note, there are letters from Annie to her family when she was away at school and college and also from her brother, Meredydd, serving in France during the First World War. Also, a letter from W.J. Gruffydd in Egypt serving in the Navy to R. Silyn Roberts. The essays are divided into the works of Edward Ffoulkes and the works of Annie Ffoulkes and the subjects covered relate mainly to Welsh history, the Welsh language and literature. Amongst the poetry there is the work of Edward Ffoulkes, R. Silyn Roberts, R. Williams Parry, T. Gwynn Jones and W.J. Gruffydd. The miscellaneous section includes the diaries of Annie Ffoulkes, 1957-1961, testimonials, bills for tuition, certificates, photographs and Eisteddfod programmes.

The second group is divided into letters, essays and addresses, poetry and miscellaneous. The letters,1876 - 1954 and essays are of a similar nature to those in the first group. The poetry, in Welsh and English, belongs to Edward Ffoulkes. The miscellaneous section contains, amongst other things, certificates belonging to Annie Ffoulkes and a minute book of the Eisteddfod of the Dinorwic Quarrymen, 1885.

Annie Ffoulkes was the daughter of Edward Ffoulkes of Llanberis. He was a writer, poet and a cultured man who worked as an officer in the Dinorwic Quarry. She received a good education. She attended the school of Dr Williams at Dolgellau, Merionethshire and went to Saumur, France to the College de Jeunes Filles before entering the University College of North Wales. She taught French at Tregaron, Cardiganshire and Barry, Glamorganshire, and later in life became the acting secretary of the Appointments Board of the University of Wales. She is best known as the editor of Telyn y Dydd which published a selection of Welsh poetry. There were four publications of the journal between 1919 and 1929. Annie Ffoulkes died on 12 November 1962.

The papers of the Annie Ffoulkes were deposited on two separate occassions and as a result they have been catalogued separately, as two groups, and arranged according to record type. They have been incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts.
