Evan enlisted for the Welsh Regiment on the 17th November 1914 and also served during World War One in the R.D. Corps and the Border Regiment. He was discharged on the 27th January 1919 (MNB/PP/4/2). In January 1918 Evan married Jessie in Swansea. They had had two children by 1922, Gordon aged 4 in 1922 and Thomas aged 2.

Evan Carruthers emigrated to the United States, arriving from Liverpool in Philadelphia on the 6th July 1920. He left his family behind him and was not to see them again for two years. His last place of 'foreign residence' was given as Chapel Street in Merthyr, but by 1922 his wife Jessie and sons were living in Wellington Street, Swansea. In 1920 Evan's residence was given as the Superior Boulder Co., Colorado. By 1922 he was living in Erie, Colorado and working as a miner for the Rocky Mountain Fuel Co. (Denver) at the Columbine Mine. In 1922 he was awarded his Shot Firer's certificate by the State of Colorado Dept. of Coal Mining (MNB/PP/4/8).

Certain of the records included in the collection refer to the travel arrangements of Evan's wife Jessie and their two sons, who finally joined Evan in the United States in the late Autumn of 1922. The papers were deposited by Evan's eldest son, Gordon.
