Scope and Content

The papers include the Portsmouth Trade Union and Labour Handbook, 1907; Portsmouth Trade and Labour Council annual report and accounts, 1908, 1911, 1912, 1913, 1916; Portsmouth Labour Party, report of sub committee to consider the best means of improving the organisation of the party, 1909; Portsmouth Education Defence Committee statement on the government's proposals for education economy (Matthews was honorary secretary), c.1922; and other papers including a card from Velia, the widow of the Italian socialist Giacomo Matteotti (murdered on the orders of Mussolini), in reply to a message of condolence from the Portsmouth labour movement.
