Papers of Gordon Jackson, including material relating to the Grosseteste Press, Asgill Press, and other literary projects and friendships.

Gordon Jackson was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, in 1938 and was at school there with the poet John Riley. Between 1966 and 1972 with his wife Helene he was a director of the Grosseteste Press (of which John Riley and Tim Longville were editors), and was responsible for the letterpress printing and much of the design work. From 1979 onwards he published titles under the imprint of the Asgill Press. Most of his working life was spent in teacher education at Bishop Grosseteste College, Lincoln. He is the author, translator or editor of numerous works, including 'Akropolis' (Asgill, 1987), 'The Lincoln psalter' (Carcanet, 1997), Isaac Watts, 'Selected poems' (Carcanet: Fyfield Books, 1999) and Robert Grosseteste, 'Complete dicta in English' (13 volumes, Asgill, 2006).

A collection of Asgill Press publications, accessioned at the same time as the papers, was transferred to the Library's printed book collections. A compact disc, 'The eternal light / Lumière eternelle', including music setting words by Jackson, accessioned at the same time as the papers, was transferred to the Music Department and given the classmark CD.10955. Correspondence relating to the Grosseteste Press is held in the Department of Archives and Modern Manuscripts in the papers of Michael Grant (MS Add.10000), John Riley (MS Add.10138) and J. H. Prynne (MS Add.10144).
