Claude Joseph Goldsmid Montefiore (1858-1938); great-nephew of Sir Moses Montefiore and grandson of Sir Isaac Lyon Goldsmid; privately educated before attending Balliol College Southampton; critic of political Zionism; established Liberal Judaism in England; President of the Liberal Jewish Synagogue, Anglo-Jewish Association and University College, Southampton; philanthropist; educationist.
