Administrative / Biographical History
The Australia-New Zealand Civil Liberties Society was based in London, where the inaugural meeting was held (in Conway Hall) in November 1951. The Society aimed to assist the maintenance of civil liberties and trade union rights with special reference to Australia and New Zealand. The Society was non-party and non-denominational. The Society actively supported a number of causes including the rights of aboriginal Australians. By the end of 1956, however, concern was being expressed at the decline in the Society's membership. Committee members were urged to publicise the Society's existence among the Australian and New Zealand community in the United Kingdom.
