Administrative / Biographical History

Charles Frederick Victor Smout (1895-1978) was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham and the University of Birmingham graduating in 1923 with MB, ChB. He was appointed to a post in the Anatomy Department at the University in 1933, becoming Professor of Anatomy in 1948. He retired in 1961. His publications include: Anatomy and physiology for students of physiotherapy, occupational therapy and gymnastics , 1944 and subsequent editions in 1947, 1956 and 1962; 5th edition published in 1968 under the title Anatomy, physiology, pathology and bacteriology for students of physiotherapy, occupational therapy and gymnastics ; The anatomy of the female pelvis , 1943; 2nd edition under the title Gynaecological and obstetrical anatomy, 1948 ; 3rd edition under the title Gynaecological and obstetrical anatomy and functional histology , 1953; 4th edition under the title Gynaecological and obstetrical anatomy : descriptive and applied , 1969; Basic Anatomy and Physiology , 1962; amended edition, 1967; An Introduction to Midwifery , 1962; A layman looks at life in general and at the Bible in particular , 1966; The Story of the Progress of Medicine , 1964.
