Scope and Content

This material mostly relates to the Victorian Pre-Raphaelite artist J.W. Waterhouse.

Includes:
Research notes for Hobson's various publications (1970-1996), including reviews and letters;
Hobson's own annotated Sothebys and Christies catalogues (1895-1916);
Material relating to his Doctorate (1978-1980);
Catalogues of Coventry and Warwickshire Society of Artists and other organisations describing works exhibited by Hobson (1965-1989);
Slides of Waterhouse paintings including subjects on architectural drawings, 20th century environment, town and country planning, Chipping Campden;
Black & white photographic prints of paintings mainly by Waterhouse.

The collection also includes a large number of slides used by Dr Hobson for his lectures, plus two paintings (including a self portrait).

Administrative / Biographical History

Dr. Hobson (who died in 2001) was the country’s leading authority on Waterhouse and was Honorary Research Fellow of Coventry Polytechnic, where he taught for many years as Head of the General Studies Department and Principal Lecturer in the History of Art. His publications include 'The Art and Life of J.W.Waterhouse RA 1814-1917' and 'J.W.Waterhouse'.
