Religious treatise, 1698

The text is written on 80 pages (original pagination). It is introduced by the title: 'The GoodWill of God to men made Evident & plaine, By The things he has done for them within ym and withoutym, whereby Hee has made known to them the way to Heaven and there interest therein, not by humanlearning but by the divine Anoynting by ye grace of God yt come upon ym, All Confirmed & Explainedby Nature & Scripture whether the Authour refers the Reader for his further conviction &sattisffaction herein not desiring any one to credit him in anything not confirmed by them. ....August 15th 1698.' The text, from page 1, is preceded by a two page preface.

Religious treatise 1698

This anonymous work, written in a paper notebook which is bound in the fragment of a parchmentdeed in English, bears the date of 15 August 1698. Other facts about its writing are unclear,although internal evidence might in time help to identify the circumstances of its creation. Theparchment fragment seems too brief for an identification of place, but the inclusion of the name'Charles Harvey' suggests that this volume may have a common provenance with MS 21, a religioustreatise dating from the 1660s which, it is suggested, may have been written or copied by CharlesHarvey of Elston, Nottinghamshire.

The custodial history of the manuscript is not known. It was given to the University ofNottingham's Department of Manuscripts in about 1949 by a Nottingham firm of solicitors, MessersHunt Dickins and Willatt, formerly Hunt, Williams and Dickens. It is assumed that it formed part ofa family collection handled by the firm.
