Administrative / Biographical History

The National Union of Hosiery Workers was formed on 1 January 1945 by the amalgamation of the Leicester and Leicestershire Amalgamated Hosiery Union, the Nottingham and District Hosiery Workers' Society, the Hinckley and District Hosiery Union and the Loughborough and District Hosiery Workers' Union. The Scottish Hosiery Union became the Scottish branch later in 1945. In 1967 the NUHW was renamed the National Union of Hosiery and Knitwear Workers, and in 1991 it amalgamated with the National Union of Footwear, Leather and Allied Trades to form the National Union of Knitwear, Footwear and Apparel Trades.

Acquisition Information

Accession MSS.506 was transferred from the University Library; accession 597 was deposited by Community, the successor trade union, in 2007. Accession 1210 was transferred from Ayrshire Archives in December 2017.
