Papers relating to the Cargill family of Strathmore

Genealogical notes on the Cargill family of Strathmore, compiled by Brian R. Cargill in Feb 1981. The notes follow 6 generations of the Cargill family over the period 1780 - 1958, viz.: David (or James) Cargill (c1780 - 1833) and his wife Grace Cameron; James Cargill (1802 - 1861) and his wife Margaret Allen; John Cargill (1829 - c 1903) and his wife Christine Tulloch; James Cargill (1864 - 1928) and his wife Jessie Andrews; Robert A.M. Cargill (1899 - 1958) and his wife Mary L. Paton; and Robert P. Cargill (b 1924) and his wife Catherine O'Brien. Copies of some family photographs (mostly early 20th c) are also appended.

The Cargill family of Strathmore has been traced back to one David (or James) Cargill, who was born in Brechin, Angus, c 1780. The family name is thought to have originated in Scotland, though links with Ireland in the late eighteenth century have also been established. David (or James) Cargill's (b c 1780) second son, David Cargill (1809 - 1861), is perhaps the most notable of his descendants, having spent most of his adult life as a missionary in Fiji, where he is credited with his co-worker, William Cross, with establishing the Wesleyan Church. A trained linguist, he also wrote the first grammar and dictionary for a Fijian language and supervised the translation of parts of the Bible into Fijian.

Brian Ryder Cargill, who compiled this record was born in Dumbarton, Dumbartonshire, on 10 November 1957, the second son of Robert Paton Cargill (b 1924) and his wife, Catherine O'Brien.
