Scope and Content

Comprises: 

  • Minutes and proceedings of the Menai Society, 1879-1903, with a copy of the first annual report and extracts from newspaper reports about meetings of the society
  • Record book of the Menai Society Library, 1888-1896, containing suggestions by members regarding acquisition of new books and a register of books borrowed
  • Minute book of the biological section of the Menai Society, 1891-1899

Administrative / Biographical History

The Menai Society of Natural Science and Literature was established at Bangor, north Wales, in January 1879 with the aim of encouraging the study of science and literature. By 1880 membership had grown to 205. Between 1897 and 1903 the Society was very active in holding courses of lectures and readings on a variety of topics. It also published articles and set up a library for members' use.

Arrangement

Material was received on separate occasions and incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts .
