Records relating to operational research in the National Coal Board and the British Coal Corporation and to George Mitchell's involvement in the Operational Research Society and in operational research generally.

Administrative / Biographical History

George Mitchell was Director of Operational Research at the National Coal Board (later the British Coal Corporation) from 1977 to 1989 and Head of Information Technology and Operational Research from 1989 to 1992. He was also a leading member of the Operational Research Society, serving as its president in 1979-1980 and chairing its education and research committee and its commission for the future practice of operational research . He was also an external examiner for university operational research courses.

Some of these records were inherited by George Mitchell from his predecessor as head of operational research at the National Coal Board, Professor Rolfe Tomlinson, who agreed that they could be treated as George Mitchell's property for the purposes of this deposit.
