Poor Law magazines 1859-1929

In April  1858  the  Society of the Inspectors of the Poor for Scotland was founded. Its stated aim was to enable inspectors to obtain information as to decisions and practice in Poor Law matters. At the monthly meeting in May  1858  it was noted that there were 320 subscribers for the Poor Law Magazine, which was 80 short of the number required. However in September  1858  the first monthly edition of the Poor Law Magazine was published and continued without a break until December  1929 . In the same year the Local Government [Scotland] Reform Act was passed and control of poor relief passed to the counties and burghs. No further numbers of the journal were published. Throughout its life it maintained the original aim of printing the decisions in the supreme and local courts affecting the Poor Law as well as carrying original articles on ‘Poor and Parochial law’. In addition there was correspondence; notes of the month; and parliamentary decisions and answers. The last Editor was  Boyd Berry, a distinguished advocate but the name of the first Editor is not recorded.
