Joe Daniels was born in South Africa in 1909, and moved to England at the age of two. He became a drummer, and when he was sixteen began playing in ship's bands on Cunard liners. In 1926 he returned to London play with trumpeter Max Goldberg, and subsequently led this and other bands. Joe Daniels' Hot Shots were formed in 1935 as a recording band, and it was there that he became recognised as British Jazz's leading drumer virtuoso. During World War II he led an RAF band, but reformed the Hot Shots afterwards. The band's name changed to the Joe Daniels Jazz Group, and continued to record into the 1950s. Daniels led a Butlin's big band until 1974, and died in 1993.
