Hermann Mannheim 1889 - 1974.

Hermann Mannheim was born in Berlin and educated at Munich, Freiburg,Strasbourg and Koenigsberg Universities. During the 1914 - 1918 war he servedin the German artillery in Russian and France. He then went on to be alecturer and professor in the faculty of law at Berlin University, whilst atthe same time being a judge in criminal courts and the court of appeal(Kammergericht) in Berlin, 1923 - 1933. Mannheim gave up his professorship when theNazis came to power and moved to London in 1934. He became a naturalisedBritish subject in 1940. In 1935 he joined the London School of Economics(LSE) as a lecturer in criminology. Mannheim became a reader in criminology in 1946and retired in 1955. In 1965 he became a honorary fellow at the LSE.

He was closely associated with the Howard League for Penal Reform, receivedhonorary doctorates from Utrecht and University of Wales, and was awarded theOBE in 1959.
