John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute: Travel Journal and Essay on Travel Writing

Scope and Content

The volume comprises a prefatory essay [1787] on travel-writing addressed by Bute to his son Charles, who accompanied him on his 1768 journey, 38 pages; an essay written in Italy, 1770, at the request of John Symonds (Regius Professor of Modern History, 1771), setting out the form in which Symonds should cast for publication material assembled in five years' travel in Italy, 72 pages; notes by Bute of a journey to Barèges, Pyrenees, in 1768, 180 pages; and a loose leaf with a list of places to be seen from 'the Mountain called Stomità...near Valdagno'. The volume is labelled on the spine 'Vol. I'.
