Administrative / Biographical History

The collection comprises records relating to the Staff Associations of the Technical College, the Scottish College of Commerce and the University of Strathclyde. The Technical College Staff Association was established in 1944 and by 1958-59 all of the academic staff were members. The Association pressed for greater participation of staff in the running of the College, and made submissions to the Robbins Committee of Inquiry into Higher Education in 1961 and petitioned the Privy Council in 1963 on the future development of the College and University. The Staff Association of the Scottish College of Commerce amalgamated with that of the Technical College in 1964, and both Associations ended with the establishment of the Strathclyde Association of University Teachers in 1972. There is also a small collection of records relating to an Association of Secretarial and Clerical Staff in the 1970s. Records of the Staff Association of Jordanhill College form part of the Jordanhill Archives.
