Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The union was formed in or before 1915 as the Prudential Staff Federation. The objects of the federation were to promote the interests of the outdoor staff of the Prudential Assurance Company Limited and to generally regulate the relations between the Company and its employees (see MSS.411/PRU/4/2/1). Its name was changed to the Prudential Staff Union in 1919 and thereafter the objectives in its rules described it is a body for employees of the company (see MSS.411/PRU/4/2/2) . In 1965 it became the National Union of Insurance Workers Prudential Section. In 1984 the process of amalgamating the sections of the National Union of Insurance Workers began. As a result of this, no section had autonomy and the ultimate decision on any issue rested with the NUIW National Council (see MSS.411/PRU/1/1/57). From 1985 the section was styled the Prudential Section of the National Union of Insurance Workers.
