The engineering firm of J H Carruthers & Co Ltd was founded in Glasgow in 1887  . In 1929 the firm was manufacturing steam and electrically driven pumps, feed-water filters and condensing plant, at its factory in Hamilton Street, Polmadie, Glasgow. By 1950 they had expanded into the manufacture of electric cranes. In 1960 the firm moved to new premises at Peel Park Place, College Milton, East Kilbride. In 1989  the company became part of Konecranes (UK) Ltd.
