Administrative / Biographical History
The Poor Law Amendment Act (1834) took away parish responsibility for thepoor and created instead Board of Guardians for the management of poor reliefthrough unions of parishes. These guardians were elected by local landownersand rate-payers. Their records include workhouse admissions registers,accounts, day books, minute books, general ledgers, and correspondence. TheLocal Government Act Board Act (1871) created a central government departmentwith responsibility for poor relief and public health.
