Administrative / Biographical History
William Joseph Harding King (1869-1933), explorer, FRGS, was educated at Jesus College Cambridge. He travelled extensively in the north African deserts. In 1900 and 1908 he was in the Western Sahara and in 1909-12 he explored the central portions of the Libyan Desert. He took part in 1913 with Oric Bates in the archaeological expedition to Marmarica. He was the author of two books - A search for the Masked Tawareks (1903) and Across the Libyan Desert (1923) - and a number of articles.

Custodial History
The photograph collection was removed from boxes in the Roborough Building basement containing 'The Desert Collection' in 2000. The Desert Collection is a series of artefacts, including pots, costumes etc. These had apparently been bequeathed to the University College of the South West.

A few of the photographs were used by King for his two books, mentioned above.
