John Manwaring Baines graduated from the University of Leeds in 1931 and later became Curator of the Borough Museum in Hastings. He was a member of the Baines family who had once owned the Leeds Mercury, and his father Frederic Talbot Baines was clerk to the Senate of Leeds University
