The papers include his notebook, correspondence, reports, handbills, photographs and other papers., together with his YMCA enamelled cap badge and metal shoulder badge. The collection provides an insight into the scope and variety of educational opportunities available to service men through the YMCA and includes lists and some photographs of other YMCA workers engaged in the scheme.

In addition, the collection includes copies of group photographs of members of the Education Department, University of Birmingham and relating to Braddock's academic career after 1919.

Administrative / Biographical History

In 1918, Sir Douglas Haig appointed the YMCA as Agent for carrying out the Army Education Scheme in France on the Lines of Communication. The YMCA sent out a staff of highly qualified civilian teachers who were employed in teaching a great variety of subjects. Men of special experience were placed in charge of the different bases. Albert Percy Braddock (b 1877), MA, BSc, a lecturer in Education at Hammersmith Training College, was placed in charge (Sub-Director) of the Abbeville base. He was subsequently recommended for transfer to the larger centre at Boulogne but the armistice led to the closure of many of the centres and he was demobilized before he could take up the Boulogne appointment. At Abbeville, he was in charge of some 20 civilian teachers and also worked with Army Education Officers and teachers from the Army. This work was terminated in April 1919 and in July 1919, Braddock came to the University of Birmingham as Head of the Men's Department in the Education Department.
