Sale catalogue details (pasted to front endpaper) state that the manuscript is that of John Clerk, Lord Eldin (1757-1832), a very successful lawyer who made his name in the trial of Deacon Brodie, eventually becoming a judge under the title of Lord Eldin. He was the son of John Clerk of Eldin (1728-1812) a Scottish artist, author and Parliamentarian, famous for his improvements in naval tactics.
