Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Association was founded in 1884, led by Sir George Young. It proposed to create a new and independent teaching university, to be called the Albert University. This was put forward in 1887 in a joint petition from University College London and King's College London. The proposal was put to a Royal Commission who at first rejected it, but in 1894 reported in favour, not of creating a second and independent university, but of combining the teaching university proposed to be set up by the Albert Charter with the existing examining body called the University of London.
