Scope and Content

Correspondence and papers of the English Editor and Assistant Editor of the Modern Language Review and Yearbook of English Studies: [1] Policy and subject files, 1974-87: Advisory panel membership; exchange journals; general correspondence; Modern Languages Association of America Abstracts; reprint permissions; and Yearbook publicity. [2] Correspondence with the Modern Humanities Research Association, 1975-87: D.A. Wells (Hon. Secretary) and R.A. Wisbey (Hon. Treasurer). [3-5] Correspondence with the printer, 1974-87; of the English Editor with other editors, 1974-88; and with reviewers, 1974-87. [6] Articles accepted, 1974-87: files for each article, reports and suggested improvements; and correspondence with other editors, printing details, lists of contents and orders for offprints. [7] Articles rejected or pending, 1976-86: letters offering articles, letters of rejection and occasional reports from specialist readers. [8] Yearbook of English Studies, annual issues, 1974-89: editorial correspondence and files for articles.
The Modern Language Review (founded 1905) has a General Editor and editors for various languages. T.J.B. Spencer and R. Smallwood were English Editor and Assistant Editor, 1973-75; Professor Claude J. Rawson and Jenny Mezciems, of Warwick University, were Editor and Assistant, 1975-87; and Professor Andrew Gurr was Editor, 1987-88. The Yearbook of English Studies was begun in 1971 as a supplement to the Modern Language Review, edited by the English Editor.
