This title-deed was part of a register of the estates of Montaigne's father, Pierre Eyquem de Montaigne. The original manuscript covered 1527-1558; most of it is now at the Bibliotheque municipale, Bordeaux. Montaigne's great-grandfather Ramond Eyquem, a wealthy merchant, bought the chateau and land of Montaigne in 1477 at the age of seventy-five.
