Deed of settlement of the Boston and Wainfleet Steam Navigation Company, 1836

The collection consists of one deed in an original red morocco wrapper.

The deed is dated 10 December 1836 and is made between all of the shareholders of the new company; the deed has 103 clauses relating to the establishment of the company, and includes agreements relating to shareholdings, the role of the directors, annual and general meetings, and other issues.

The settlement is signed by 151 shareholders; details of their name, place of residence, profession, number of shares, and amount of money paid are given.

The Boston and Wainfleet Steam Navigation Company (later known as The Boston, Wainfleet and London Steam Navigation Company) was established as a joint stock company in 1836. Its purpose was to carry passengers, cattle, goods, wares and merchandise between Boston and Wainfleet in Lincolnshire, and London, using steam vessels. The company's capital stock was £40,000, divided into 1,600 shares of £25 each. The company had a wharf at Wainfleet, and another at Scotia Creek just south of Boston. The company's first vessel was called the Scotia. By 1842 two vessels per week were travelling to London. Little more is known of the company, but it probably did not survive long after the opening of the Boston railway in 1848.
