Administrative / Biographical History
This private bank was established in 1780, in Wirksworth, as John Toplis. Richard Arkwright joined the partnership in 1804 and it became Arkwright, Toplis & Co. His father, also called Richard, invented the water frame, which had revolutionised cotton spinning. When Toplis died in 1829 the firm was renamed Arkwright & Co. It went on to finance important transportation projects including the Cromford Canal.
In 1875 the business was acquired by Moore & Robinson's Nottinghamshire Banking Company (est. 1802).
