Scope and Content

A collection of 175 uncaptioned photographs measuring 110 x 80 mm., inserted into an album mostly four to a page. The photographs seem to record a trip to South Africa at the end of the 19th century, including visits to a number of homesteads and farms in the Cape Colony. Subjects include horses and other livestock (49 Photographs), landscapes (40), family groupings (23), homesteads (16), views from onboard ship (21), indigenous people (4) etc. There are views of Lion's Head, a distinctive outcropping in Cape Town; Groote-Schuur, the Prime Minister's residence; a herd of ostriches and operations of an ostrich-ranch near Oudtshoorn; and a few views of the Drakensberg Range.
