London University Plans

Scope and Content

1 volume of plans and specifications for the original building of London University, now University College, London.

Administrative / Biographical History

Eight acres of land in Bloomsbury were bought in August 1825 by Isaac Lyon Goldsmid, John Smith and Benjamin Shaw for the new University of London. A competition for the building design was advertised and the neo-Grecian design by William Wilkins was chosen. The foundation stone was laid by the Duke of Sussex 30 April 1827 but financial constraints meant that Wilkins's ambitious design was never fully realised.
