Adey Horton Collection

The collection consists of relevant reference books, which are added to at the request of Mr. Adey Horton, as well as 123 colour-coded foolscap ring binders of Iconography. The collection is divided according to denomination, type of art (for example, 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, architectural), and subject (for example, Old Testament, Magi, Shepherds, Saints, the Descent of Christ into Hell).

Victor John Adey Horton was born at Chichester on 1 September 1912. An expert on Christian Iconography, he was the author of The Child Jesus (1975), among other works. He came to Iconography only in middle life, but dedicated himself to the study of that subject and amassed a great collection of copies of images, paintings, sculpture, and architectural features of iconographic significance. He died in Troo, France, on 18 October 1988.
