The Aberdeen Union Perseverance Society was formed on 1 May 1818 by James Johnston, mason; James Hunter, mason; Samuel Johnston, mason; Alexander Davidson, mason; William Hey, mason; James Edmund, millwright; David Gardner, carter; and Patrick Morrice, miller, all of Aberdeen. The Rules of the Society, printed in 1818, name 55 members at this time, and state that this figure should not rise above 60. Each member was bound to pay 10 shillings entry-money and a sum of 4 shillings per month thereafter for a 7 year period. At the close of the 7 years, members could decide if they wished to sell their shares and dissolve the society, or if they wished to extend the contract for a further period. The Society continued to operate until June 1840.
